PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveform equalizer where the occurrence of an error in an adaptation area is reduced and the whole of remaining waveform data is equalized optimally. SOLUTION: The waveform equalizer is provided with an FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filter 4 for generating an equalized signal string by the waveform equalization of an inputted signal string based on an equalization characteristic, and a normal equation arithmetic circuit 9 which makes the equalization characteristic of the FIR filter 4 adapted according to the inputted signal string. Based on the equalization characteristic adapted from a part of area of the inputted signal string by the FIR filter 4, the normal equation arithmetic circuit 9 carries out equalization and adaptation in a state of carrying out waveform equalization to an area including at least a part of the remaining area of the inputted signal string which is not used for preparing the equalization characteristic.
