PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical pencil, which can prevent malfunction from developing as few as possible and obtain a favorable writing action by a method wherein a chucking body, which can hold/release a lead, is arranged ahead of a lead housing tube. SOLUTION: In the mechanical pencil having the chucking body for holding/releasing the lead and an operating member for operating the chucking body, the chucking body and the operating member are arranged interlockingly/non-interlockingly and, at the same time, the chucking body and the operating member are energized backwards with independent resilient members.
