PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antibacterial agent which has a high antibacterial effect and low mutagenicity. SOLUTION: This antibacterial agent comprises a sulfonium salt as an active ingredient, wherein the cation of the sulfonium salt has a structure of formula (I) [W is the residue of an aromatic compound (which may contain one or more heterogeneous atoms as ring-constituting atoms); two or more W groups may be identical or different, when (q) is 2 or more; the aromatic compound residue represented by W may have one or more substituents such as halogen atoms, hydroxyl group, and 1 to 20C alkyl groups; Y is a 1 to 20C alkyl, a 1 to 20C alkoxy, or the like; (q) is an integer of 1 to 3; (r) is an integer of 0 to 2, wherein (q)+(r)=3].
