The method involves storing user and/or vehicle-individual positioning data in a source control device that is replaced or reprogrammed. A safety-relevant data record for description of user-and/or vehicle individual position is transferred from the device to a diagnosis-and configuration device (1). The record is read from a source location by the configuration device and is intermediately stored in the configuration device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a motor vehicle-control device for implementing a method of backup of user and/or vehicle-individual positioning data of a motor vehicle (2) a diagnosis-and configuration device for implementing a method of backup of user and/or vehicle-individual positioning data of a motor vehicle.
