The method involves defining one of masks (7) at each of light sources (4) that include a set of pixels (11) in a surrounding area of the sources. Color values of the pixels contained in the masks are determined for colors of the sources, and brightness values are calculated for the sources from the color values. Color transformation of image data of images is carried out in a color space before calculating the brightness values. An independent claim is also included for a display device for displaying an image.
