<p>Copolymers containing siloxy and carbonate linkages are the reaction product of (1) a dihydric phenol; (2) an organo dihalo-silane or an organo diaryloxy or dialkoxysilane and (3) an ester-forming derivative of carbonic acid. The polymers may be prepared by effecting an ester-interchange reaction between (1) a dihydric phenol; (2) a diaryloxy or dialkoxysilane (e.g. dimethyldiphenoxysilane) and (3) a carbonate ester (e.g. diphenyl carbonate, using a vacuum cork melt polymerization technique. Alternatively they may be prepared by reacting together (1) a dihydric phenol; (2) a dihalosilane and (3) a dihalocarbonyl (especially phosgene) or a bis-chloroformate of a dihydric phenol (e.g. hydroquinone or bis-phenol A) or a glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol or polyethylene glycol). The latter reaction is effected in the presence of a tertiary amine (e.g. pyridine) and possibly an inert solvent. The reactants may be reacted simultaneously or reactants (1) and (2) or (1) and (3) may be first reacted followed by the addition of the third reactant. Examples describe the manufacture of copolymers by reacting bis-phenol A or tetrachloro-bis-phenol A, dimethyldichlorosilane and phosgene. Fillers, e.g. wood flour, diatomaceous earth, silica or carbon black may be added. Uses-moulding powders, gaskets, tubing, films, electrical insulating and sound recording tapes, fibres, surface castings, shot insulation and adhesives.</p> |
