The cathode collector 26 of a flat, dry, primary cell has an electrolyte impervious conductive film 28 laminated to both sides. This film may be made of polythene having graphite incorporated therein but is preferably made of a mixture of graphite and polyisobutylene rubber. In the cell shown in Fig. 1, the cathode collector 26 is of tinplated steel and is surrounded by depolizer cakes 14 of manganese dioxide containing electrolyte, bibulous separators 20 of methyl cellulose, and a U-shaped anode 16 of zinc. The bibulous separators may be laminated to the anode. In Fig. 6 (not shown), a plurality of such cells are enclosed in a non-conductive, moisture impervious plastics envelope of, for example vinyl, vinylor, polyesters, polyethylene or " Pliofilm " (Registered Trade Mark). The envelope is then folded to form a stack of cells which are tied together with tapes, inserted in a container and sealed with asphalt or wax. In Fig. 12, the connector 24 of the cathode collector 26 is enveloped in a plastics wrapper 36 which is sealed to the film 28 laminated to the cathode collector. Barbs 52 are provided on the connector 24 which pierce the wrapper of an adjacent cell and engage its anode at 55 when the connector is bent through 180 degrees. In Fig. 9 (not shown), a cathode unit, comprising a laminated cathode collector sandwiched between two depolarizer cakes, is inserted between two cells which are similar to those shown in Fig. 1 except that a bibulous separator is laminated to both sides of the anode. An intercell connector comprising a straight conductor having barbs on both sides which pierce the wrappers of adjacent cells in a stack connecting them in parallel is described, Fig. 15 (not shown). |
