发明名称 Small gap data tape communication system
摘要 945,552. Output arrangements for data-storage apparatus. COLLINS RADIO CO. May 23, 1960 [Sept. 28, 1959], No.18145/60. Heading G4C. Data read from magnetic or other tape 19 (Fig. 2) at speeds subject to variation is written into a buffer store 22 which is read out by pulses from a synchronous source 24 for onward transmission. Fig. 1 shows the timing of data input and output for the buffer 22; Data is recorded on tape in six parallel tracks and in blocks of 120 bits/ track with a 10% space between blocks. Read-out of a block from 22 commences when bit 8 is being read in, so that A represents the slowest read-in permissible (where read-out has "caught up" with read-in by bit 120). If read-in is faster (line D) it is necessary to stop the tape to maintain the space between read-out blocks; this is done at bit 110 read-out (if this occurs after read-in is completed) and the tape started again when read-out (line E) is completed. Coincidence between read-in and read-out signals for 22 (Fig. 2) is prevented by use of a pulse source 61 producing pulses alternately on lines 62 and 63 at a rate approx. ten times that of synchronous timer 24, switches 51 and 71 each selecting the second pulse received after their bit signals (lines 44 and 25) for writing in and reading out from 22. Signals from each bit position of a block (the six information bits are called a word) are passed to or gate 42 together with timing and parity bits from the remaining two tracks and the output of 42 shaped and passed to 51 as described; it is also fed to a counter 46 (reset at the end of the previous block read-out) to give a "start read-out" pulse on line 47 (count 8), a stop tape" enabling signal on line 49 (count 120) and a reset signal for buffer read counter 76. Counter 46 is reset at the end of the reading of each block from buffer 22. The signal on line 47 switches a unit 81 to enable pulses from line 63 to be selected at the frequency of timer 24, and these pulses read out 22. Counter 76 counts the words read out and at 110 provides a signal to gate 84 which if tape reading of the block is finished switches 83 to stop the tape. 83 is then reset at count 120, unit 81 is switches to cut off pulses from 22 and counter 46 is reset for writing the next block into 22. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) illustrate parity-bit checking means combined with the apparatus of Fig. 2; a parity bit for each word is already recorded in the eighth track of the tape and in addition two parity words are generated at the end of each block (words 121 and 122). These are obtained by summing the odd and even bits in each track separately (between 20 and 22) and are written into and read out of the buffer as part of a 122-word block. After receipt at 26 the two words are generated afresh for each block and compared with the check words as received; an error signal is generated if they do not correspond or if any of the check sums generated by dynamicising each word in a high-speed shift register is not "1". This error signal may be transmitted back over line 99 in a "space" period and control tape reader 20 to back up and re-read the block. Specification 828, 782 is referred to.
