The invention relates to a device for coupling cable segments. Each cable contains an electrical line and an optical line. The device includes an optical amplifier for boosting signals transmitted on the optical line. The amplifier draws power from the electrical line, preferably by inductive coupling. The invention may be used for subsea communication, such as with a well or subsea structure. The device may be made up from first and second connectors, with the amplifier being housed within one of the connectors. The first connector may mate with the second connector to form a releasable connection. |
