A PREHEATER (10) MOUNTED VIA A FURNACE LID (80) ON AN ARC FURNACE (70) IS PROPOSED. TWO PREHEATER CHAMBERS (4) AND ( 5) ARE PROVIDED IN A SHAFT (14) FORMING THE PREHEATER (10), FOR STORING AND PREHEATER METAL SCRAPS. A PART OF A GATE PROVIDED IN THE PREHEATER (10) IS PROJECTED OUTWARDLY OF A FURNACE WALL (73), THEREBY ENLARGING THE INNER SPACE OF THE SHAFT (14). WITHOUT INCREASING THE DIAMETER OF THE ARC FURNACE (70), METAL SCRAPS CAN BE STORED. THE PREHEATER AND THE FURNACE LID CAN BE FORMED SEPARATELY, AND A PERIPHERAL EDGE DEFINING AN OPEN END OF THE FURNACE LID IS FORMED IN AN ARC CENTERING ON A TILT CENTRAL AXIS OF A FURNACE BODY (71). THE FURNACE BODY (71) CAN BE TILTED WHILE THE PREHEATER IS IMMOBILE. THE GATE PROVIDED IN THE PREHEATER (10) CAN BE COOLED WITH WATER, OR CAN BE FORMED OF FINGERS OPERATED INDIVIDUALLY OR IN GROUPS. A METHOD OF CONTROLLING A QUANTITY OF GAS TO BE INTRODUCED INTO THE PREHEATER (10) AND A METHOD OF PREHEATING METAL SCRAPS IN THE PREHEATER (10) ARE ALSO PROPOSED.(FIGURE 1)
