A process for post-chlorinating vinyl chloride polymer resins comprises passing chlorine into an agitated suspension of a minor porportion of macro-granular particles of vinyl chloride polymer resin, substantially all of said particles being larger than 10 microns in diameter and having from 5 to 50% by volume of pore space and a specific viscosity of at least 0.40, in a major proportion of an aqueous medium containing 2 to 25% by volume, based on the total liquid content of said medium, of a chloromethane, maintaining said suspension at a temperature of 50 to 100 DEG C. and a pressure of 20 to 80 p.s.i.g. in the substantial absence of oxygen and photo-illumination, separating a solid, macro-granular chlorinated product from said suspension and neutralizing said product. The resin may be a polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, ethylene, propylene, styrene, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile. The chloromethane may be mono-, di- or trichloromethane. Specified neutralizing agents are sodium, potassium and ammonium hydroxides, carbonates or phosphates. The product may be subsequently washed with water to remove residual electrolyte, and compounded with conventional stabilizers, e.g. dibutyl tin dilaurate, the laurates and stearates of barium, calcium, cadmium and lead, tin maleates and epoxy compounds; filters; dyes and pigments; lubricants and mould-release agents.
