The friction applying apparatus (6) has a sliding member moved along a contacted member (3). A press member pressing the sliding member against the contacted members so as to generate a friction between the sliding member and the contacted member. At least a portion of the sliding member that are bought in friction contact with the contacted member is made of a material having elastic modulus being 5000 MPa or less and Vickers hardness being 400 or more.
