A measuring process for a program-controlled machine tool using a measuring sphere comprises positioning the sphere (5) at a machine part (2), having an installed measuring probe (6) in a chosen exact position, moving the probe to contact different points on the sphere surface and thus determine the location of the sphere center. This is compared with the ideal position stored in the control unit.
