A gas scrubbing apparatus includes a container (2) for holding a liquid (3) from which a mist is generated by a spinning rotor (4) which is partially immersed in the liquid. The mist is generated in a treatment space above the liquid in the container, through which space a gas, typically air, is circulated. The interior surface of the container wall (15) surrounding the liquid and/or the treatment space has a horizontal cross- sectional shape that is non-circular. The non-circular shape may be provided by an other-wise circular shape having one or more inwardly extending protrusions such as vanes (30), flats or lobes. The non-circularities are said to contribute to the reduction of the noise associated with operation of the device. The container wall may extend upwardly to a junction with an inward return ( 16). Different parts of the length of the junction are preferably at different heights above the bottom of the container.
