A method and apparatus (100) to read information from an information storage medium (360) using a read channel, where that read channel includes a data cache (403). The invention generates an analog waveform comprising the information, and provides (1005) that analog waveform to read channel, and generates (1025) a digital signal from that analog waveform using one or more first operating parameters. The method error corrects that digital signal at an actual error correction rate, and determines (1040) if the actual error correction rate is greater than an error correction rate threshold. If the actual error correction rate exceeds the error correction rate threshold, then the method captures (1060) the digital signal, stores (1070) that captured data in a data cache (403), reads (l080) that digital signal from the cache (403), generates (l090) one or more second operating parameters, and provides (1095) those one or more second operating parameters to the read channel. Thereafter, the method uses those one or more second operating parameters to read the information from the information storage medium.
