The device (DT) has a processing unit (MT) defining connecting n-dimensional domains having complementary shapes defined by position data and comprising input data, upon receipt of the data. The unit (MT) determines a representation function representing the input data. The function is constructed from basic functions selected from databases of basic functions and associated with the selected coefficients, respectively. The unit (MT) transforms the coefficients of the representation function into representation data. The representation data and the associated position data define the output data representative of the input data. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a video or image data encoder comprising an n-dimensional input data processing device (2) a video or image representative input data decoder comprising a data reconstitution device.
