The flask closer or opener consists of a support (3) with one or more cavities to receive flasks (4), and an electrically-operated and electronically-controlled power cylinder (6) with a head (7) to apply a pressure to a sealing cap on each flask. The support can be made to hold a single flask directly beneath the power cylinder, or rotate in the form of a carousel to present flasks beneath the power cylinder one at a time, with an inductance or photoelectric sensor to ensure correct positioning.
