PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a defect that a halftone-displayed background image may be difficult to see if a given hue is added additionally when an original video signal is attenuated into a halftone display in an on-screen display in a television receiver. SOLUTION: In a circuit in which an adder circuit 12 combines a luminance component Y and chroma components (R-Y), (G-Y), (B-Y) of the original image to generate signals of each RGB color, a switch element 10 is provided for limiting input of the chroma components into the adder circuit 12. When an I signal specifies a halftone display area, the switch element 10 is turned off on the basis of the I signal. Color halftone display is made by shifting a direct-current level of a component corresponding to the hue added from the RGB with a DC shift circuit 16 after output signal from the adder circuit 12 for each of the RGB is attenuated with an amplifier 14.
