PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably extract and recognize embossed characters and reliably detect counterfeits even when cards with various background tints are used without influencing transaction processing. SOLUTION: Two light sources are provided, and embossed characters are recognized and collated with magnetic data according to differences between an image acquired by emitting light from one in card insertion and an image acquired by emitting light from the other light source in primary card ejection. Alternatively, two light sources are provided, and embossed characters are recognized and collated with magnetic data for counterfeit detection according to differences between an image acquired by emitting light from one in card insertion and an image acquired by emitting light from the other light source in card ejection and, if a counterfeit is detected, the transaction is canceled. Alternatively, two rod lens arrays, image sensors and A/D conversion parts are provided, and embossed characters can be extracted, recognized and collated with magnetic data for counterfeit detection according to differences between acquired images.
