<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode which has high capacity and can improve battery characteristics such as large current discharging characteristics and low temperature discharge characteristics, and to provide a battery. <P>SOLUTION: The negative electrode 10 comprises a negative electrode collector 11, and a negative electrode active material layer 12 provided on this negative electrode collector 11. The density of the negative electrode active material layer 12 is in the range of 1.5 to 1.8 g/cm<SP>3</SP>. Further, the negative electrode active material layer 12 includes granulated graphite material 12B formed by granulating and spheroidizing flat graphite particles 12A, and mesocarbon microbeads 12C.
