<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image of a satisfactory image quality by reducing image failure resulting from nonuniform electrification due to an environmental change or a durability change, regardless of variations in the electrifying capability of a photoreceptor. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus in which the surface of an image carrier is subjected to electrification and development, and an image is transferred on a transfer material includes: a scorotron charger for electrifying the image carrier to a required surface potential; and a surface potential detection means for detecting a surface potential on the image carrier. The correction of the set value of a current applied to a discharge wire is controlled using information relating to: the surface potential of the image carrier, calculated using the surface potential detection means on the image carrier; the value of a current applied to the discharge wire of the scorotron charger; amounts of discharge current necessary to obtain the desired surface potential, which correspond to the upper and lower limits of the electrifying capability of the mounted photoreceptor, which are stored in the image forming apparatus; and a rate of change in surface potential with respect to the amounts of discharge current of the photoreceptor, which correspond to the upper and lower limits of the electrification capability. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
