Disclosed is a black ink composition which enables to obtain a printed matter wherein fine surface defects are effectively suppressed. Specifically disclosed is a black ink composition containing water, carbon black and a water-soluble polyurethane resin. When the carbon black content is not less than 0.4% by weight and less than 1.5% by weight, the solid content of the water-soluble polyurethane resin is not less than 0.67 and not more than 2.5 times the carbon black content; and when the carbon black content is less than 0.4% by weight, the solid content of the water-soluble polyurethane resin is not less than 7.5 times the carbon black content.
