The sensor has a measurement unit (14) to measure position of an object, and a signal generator including a microprocessor and a low pass filter circuit, where the microprocessor provide a rectangular position signal. The circuit converts the rectangular signal to a sinusoidal position signal, which includes information about the position derived from the measured value. The information is coded in a frequency of the position signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a position of an object relative to a position measurement sensor.
