The device has an ignition lock (1) providing a key detection signal to an evaluation device (3) on insertion of a key. A transponder detection device (2) transmits a radio signal to close proximity of the lock. A transponder in the key detects the signal and responds with a response signal. The device (2) provides a transponder detection signal to the evaluation device, which provides an enabling signal to a vehicle controller. An independent claim is also included for a method of informing a person about the attachment of a transponder to a vehicle key, including a process for detecting the attachment of the transponder to the key and a process for releasing the vehicle controller.
