PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus designed so that transfer failure and image failure, which result from axial inclination of a transfer roller, are prevented and a user can easily remove a jam. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus conveys a sheet material P while holding it between a photoreceptor drum 10a and the transfer roller 11. The image forming apparatus includes: a transfer roller gear 18; a rachet 23 that transmits rotating force to the transfer roller 11 only when the transfer roller gear 18 is rotated in one direction; a spring 22 disposed between the rachet 23 and a transfer roller bearing 21 and axially pressing the rachet 23 to the transfer roller gear 18. When the rotating force in the one direction is inputted to the transfer roller gear 18, the rachet 23 pressed by the spring 22 transmits the rotating force in the one direction to the transfer roller 11. When the rotating force in the one direction is applied to the transfer roller 11 by the sheet material P, the rachet 23 rotates together with the transfer roller 11 while idly rotating with respect to the transfer roller gear 18.
