PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader improving the independence of a scanner unit, enhancing assembly efficiency, and preventing start delay due to a dark state by enabling the scanner unit to generate power by itself within the housing of the scanner unit carrying a scanner carriage and by turning on/off a light emitting component thereby. SOLUTION: The image reader having a noble gas fluorescence tube 12 for exposure includes: a power generation motor 5 for generating power in synchronization with the movement of the scanner carriage 2; and a light emitting component 11 turned on by the power generated by the power generating motor 5, and used to emit light to the noble gas fluorescence tube 12.
