The invention concerns a method for controlling an internal combustion engine ( 2 ) for regenerating exhaust gas purifying means ( 14 ) arranged on an exhaust line ( 4 ) of the engine ( 2 ), during a phase of regeneration of the purifying means ( 14 ), which consists in: analyzing an exhaust gas composition solely downstream of the purifying means ( 14 ), and developing based on said analysis a control signal for the engine ( 2 ) to modify an exhaust gas composition upstream of the purifying means ( 14 ).
