Varnish composition (I) based on alkyd resin with a content of volatile organic compounds comprises at least a solid alkyd resin (25-65 wt.%), at least one pigment and/or filler (0-40 wt.%), at least one drying agent (0.5-5 wt.%), at least one solvent (10-30 wt.%), water (5-25 wt.%) and further additives (0-25 wt.%), of maximally 300 g/l of (I).
