<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus designed such that a user's waiting time is reduced, productivity is high, process control accuracy is improved by correct detection of the density and position information of a toner pattern, and stable image quality is ensured. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus detects the density or position information of a toner pattern on an intermediate transfer body with a prescribed timing by an image density detection means, and exerts process control based upon the result of the detection. In the image forming apparatus, when the toner pattern is formed, a secondary transfer roller is separated from an intermediate transfer body, then an image is formed with such a timing that a toner pattern formed by an image forming unit located furthest downstream in the direction of the movement of the intermediate transfer body first comes to the detecting area of the image density detecting means.
