<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method of an internal combustion engine for controlling valve timing of intake and exhaust valves and an operating angle of the intake valve by technique suitable to an engine operation state in transition operation of the internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: In the control method, the respective valve timing VTi, VTe of the intake and exhaust valves and the operating angle VLi of the intake valve are controlled so that they agree to respective target values Tvti, Tvte, Tvli set based on the engine operation state. In an engine low load region (S200 and S300: NO), control (relative value control) is performed for bringing valve overlap amounts of the intake and exhaust valves and target valve overlap amounts in agreement (S402 and S404).
