<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain less complexity and to reduce cost by minimizing the number of elements to be used. <P>SOLUTION: This five-level inverter is constituted only by adding switching elements Qu3 and Qx3 to a three-level inverter formed by connecting a first to a fourth switching element group Qu11, Qu12, Qu21, Qu22, Qx11, Qx12, Qx21, Qx22 in parallel between a positive and a negative pole (P, N) of a DC power supply; connecting a first diode group Du1, Du2 between a junction of Qu12 and Qu21 and a junction of DC power supplies C12 and C21; and connecting a second diode group Dx1, Dx2 to between a junction of Qx12 and Qx21 and a junction of DC power supplies C12 and C21.
