PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating operation mechanism of an image forming apparatus in which enhancement of operation feeling, reduction of operating power and enhancement of durability are made possible at low cost. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a developing means, an image carrier and a transfer means. The transfer means is capable of taking a first position where the transfer means is positioned in a pressurized contact with the image carrier and a second position released from the pressurized contact with the image carrier. The reciprocating operation mechanism of the image forming apparatus has a reciprocatable final controlling element which moves the transfer means from the second position to the first position and, on the other hand, moves the same from the first position to the second position and has positioning means at two or more points for positioning the transfer means to the first position by moving according to the movement of the final controlling element, wherein the movement of the at least one point of the positioning means with respect to the movement of the final controlling element is provided with dead zones and thereby the phase deviation of the positioning means with each other arising in positioning the transfer means or releasing the same can be negated.
