PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent mismatching on a file system when one of a management area and an actual area is replaced because of failure, even in the file system employing a configuration in which the management area and the actual area are arranged so that they are physically separated. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises an identification information storing means for storing predetermined identification information; a first storing means capable of storing data; and a backup power source. The apparatus also comprises a second storing means for storing management information about the storing state of the data in the first storage means; a determining means for determining whether or not information matching the identification information is stored in the second storing means; an initializing means for initializing the second storing means if the determining means determines that the second storing means has not stored the matching information; and a writing means for writing the matching information into the second storing means after the initialization.
