An electric-discharge lamp operation device includes a reflection mirror (2) arranged around an electric-discharge lamp bulb (1) so that the light is emitted from the electric-discharge lamp bulb (1) in one direction, and a power supply circuit (5) for applying a start pulse of negative potential with respect to the potential of the reflection mirror (2) to an electrode (6) located at a higher side of field concentration generated between the electrodes (6, 7) to which high voltage of the start pulse is applied. Thus, breakdown is generated in the vicinity of the electrode (6) so as to facilitate the start of the electric-discharge lamp bulb (1).
