<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine capable of selecting and sorting large diameter fine particles and small diameter fine particles in an exhaust passage and treating them securely. <P>SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control device for the internal combustion engine catches fine particles included in exhaust gas in the internal combustion engine to catch large diameter fine particles by a first filter and catch small diameter fine particles by a second filter. Separate filters are used as the first filter and the second filter, but the filter used as the first filter is the same as the filter used as the second filter or has rougher mesh than mesh of the second filter to catch only large diameter fine particles. Here, an exhaust passage for leading exhaust gas into a second particulate matter means is branched like side branches for the exhaust passage for leading exhaust gas into the first filter. Consequently, fine particles in exhaust gas can be selected and sorted into large diameter fine particles and small diameter fine particles by inertia force.
