PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk reproducing apparatus capable of naturally emphasizing a contour by avoiding overemphasis of the contour of an on-screen display part. SOLUTION: The optical disk reproducing apparatus comprises a digital video signal reading means 9 for reading a video signal from an optical disk; an on-screen display signal generating means 13 for using characters or a figure to display the operation state of the reproducing apparatus on a display screen of the reproducing apparatus; a contour emphasizing circuit 11 for adding a contour emphasis signal to a composite signal of the digital video signal read by the reading means and the on-screen display signal generated by the on-screen display signal generating means; and a control unit 14 for controlling the entire reproducing apparatus. The control unit 14 causes an adding control circuit 11d to limit the output of the contour emphasizing circuit to a value not more than a predetermined level while the on-screen display signal generating means is generating the on-screen display signal.
