PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus wherein its whole height is reduced, the degree of freedom in terms of layout of a scanning optical system is increased, and an exposure apparatus which is extendable for a plurality of models is provided. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with the plurality of exposure apparatuses 100A and 100B provided with: deflecting means 101A and 101B for deflecting a luminous flux emitted from a light supply means and main-scanning; return mirrors 103A, 103B, 103C and 103D for changing the advancing direction of the luminous flux deflected by the deflecting means 101A and 101B. The apparatus is also, equipped with a plurality of image carriers 201A, 201B, 201C and 201D on which electrostatic latent images are formed with the luminous flux emitted from the plurality of exposure apparatuses 100A and 100B. The deflecting means 101A and 101B, and the return mirrors 103A, 103B, 103C and 103D constituting the plurality of exposure apparatuses 100A and 100B are arranged in nearly the same plane, and also, an angleθformed by the aforesaid plane and a horizontal direction is set to be 0°<θ<90°.
