PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter which is suitably installed horizontally and easily removes foreign matter of high specific gravity. SOLUTION: The filter is provided with a cylindrical body vessel 1; a cylindrical filter element 2 provided in the body vessel 1 coaxially therewith and removing foreign matter contained in fluid; a flow-in pipe 3 provided at one axial end of the body vessel 1 tangentially in relation to the circumferential wall thereof and introducing the filtering object fluid; a flow-out pipe 6 causing the filtrate to flow out of the filter element 2; and a foreign matter discharge pipe 7 provided at the other axial end of the body vessel 1 tangentially in relation to the circumferential wall thereof and causing the foreign matter to flow out, and the filter is characterized in that the fluid introduced from the flow-in pipe 3 is caused to produce swirling flow, consequently the fluid is caused to pass from the outside of the filter element 2 into the inside to cause filtrate to flow out of the flow-out pipe 6, also foreign matter is discharged from the foreign matter discharge pipe 7. In the filter so constituted that foreign matter can be discharged from the foreign matter discharge pipe 7, a tapered pipe 5 is disposed near the flow-in pipe 3 axially adjacent to the filter element 2, the tapered pipe 5 deflecting the flowing-in fluid to the foreign matter discharge pipe 7 and having no filtering function.
