IMAGE CONVERSION AND ENCODING TECHNIQUE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce left and right eye images for a stereoscopic display from an original 2D image.

SOLUTION: A method of producing the left and right eye images for the stereoscopic display from the original 2D image includes the steps of: (a) identifying at least one object within the original image; (Ib) outlining the above or each object, (c) defining a depth characteristic for the above or each object and (d) respectively displacing selected areas of the above or each image by a determined amount in a lateral direction as a function of the depth characteristic of the objects to form two stretched images for viewing by the left and right eyes of a viewer.
