PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a protective and decorative coating having desired visible color compatible with a previously determined or selected coating composition from a minimum amount of colorants. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the method for preparing a previously selected protective and decorative coating for coating on a substrate by color matching on visible spectrum. The method comprises, (a) characterizing the visible color of the previously selected coating by measuring absorbance or reflectance of the coating, and (b) selecting a plurality of colorants and includes preparation of coating composition with a combination of resinous binder and the plurality of colorants.
