Substances for addition to animal foods are made from a liposoluble extract of vegetable chlorophyll, e.g. dried lucerne extracted with chlorethylene, by saponifying the extract with a concentrated alkaline solution in the presence of methanol, and adding a solution of a salt of an alkaline earth, lithium, magnesium or aluminium, to obtain a precipitate, which precipitate is dried. In an example, dried lucerne, after extraction with chlorethylene, is saponified at about 65 DEG C. with a 40% solution of sodium hydroxide in the presence of methanol. After the reaction of solution of calcium chloride is added and the resulting precipitate is washed and dried. The product is a dark green powder containing 20% of cholorphyll soaps, stated to be free-flowing, non-hygroscopic and stable at ambient temperatures up to 80 DEG C. |
