PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an e-mail communications apparatus which can transmit an e-mail while giving a digital signature for a plurality of destinations by single sign operation, regardless of the signature-receiving capability of the destination. SOLUTION: When transmission of the signature of a mail is designated, a decision is made whether all destinations designated to transmit a mail have a signature receiving capability (step 101). If all destinations have signature-receiving capability, normal S/MIME signature is performed (step 102), before an e-mail is transmitted (step 103). If at least one destination does not have signature-receiving capability, clear text signing is performed (step 104) and an S/MIME clear signature mail, that combines an e-mail with a digital signature and plain text of the e-mail text, is transmitted.
