PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reading apparatus capable of reading an original without requiring an operation of a start key. SOLUTION: When a time (a) elapses after a previous original document is read, an original is put in a document feeder tray, and then, the original is picked up within a predetermined time (b) from the insertion. After that, the original is put in the original feeder tray again within the predetermined time (b). If an original sensor senses that the time when the original is inserted exceeds a predetermined time (c), it is instructed to start original reading without requiring an operation of the start key.
