PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus preventing the smudge of a transfer material. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier; an image forming means which forms an image to the image carrier; and a transfer means which faces the image carrier, and has the elasticity constituting a plate shape to transfer the image formed by the image forming means to the transfer material by passing the transfer material in a transfer area between the image forming means and the image carrier in contact therewith. The transfer means is characterized in that the upstream side in the progressing direction of the transfer material comes into contact with the image carrier during cleaning as compared to the time during transferring.
