PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine misfire of an internal combustion engine properly with high precision. SOLUTION: Rotation fluctuation Nxd being a fluctuation value of rotational speed N of a crank shaft per crank angle 120°CA corresponding to ignition timing of each cylinder of a six-cylinder engine and sum Nxdint of rotation fluctuation as sum with the rotation fluctuation Nxd before crank angle 360°CA are calculated from difference Nxdflx in rotation fluctuation as difference from the rotation fluctuation Nxd before crank angle 360°CA from the rotation fluctuation Nxd and the rotation fluctuation Nxd (S100 to S140). Single misfire determining processing being single misfire determining logic for determining single misfire pattern, continuous misfire determining processing being continuous misfire determining logic for determining continuous misfire pattern, and intermittent misfire determining processing being intermittent misfire determining logic for determining intermittent misfire pattern are performed using the calculated rotation fluctuation Nxd, difference Nxdflx in rotation fluctuation, and sum Nxdint of rotation fluctuation (S150 to S170) to determine misfire of the engine.
