PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Stirling engine with a high specific power by finding a cause in a conventional Stirling engine wherein the specific power (output per unit weight) thereof is small and taking a measure against the cause. SOLUTION: In this single cylinder type Stirling engine, when an output piston reaches a top dead center or near the top dead center, a displacer piston is lowered so as to be brought into contact with or close to the output piston at a highest speed that will not obstruct passing and heat trasmission of a working gas to heat and expand the working gas. In a stroke for pressing down the output piston by the expansion of the working gas, the displacer piston is lowered until the output piston reaches a bottom dead center or near the bottom dead center while maintaining the contact state or close proximity state of the output piston to the displacer piston to increase the working gas related to the generation of power so as to increase the specific power.
