The method involves determining characteristic values for a dynamic behavior of a parameter of fluid flow, where the parameter changes with varying load conditions, during operation of a motor vehicle. An average value of the characteristics values is determined over a characteristic time period, during an operation of an internal combustion engine. A distortion factor is determined to display the behavior of the parameter. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine which is coupled with a control device of a motor vehicle.
