#CMT# #/CMT# The shopping trolley includes a product scanner for the goods being placed in the trolley and a card reader connected to the scanner and to the supermarket computer system. The steel mesh around the trolley ensures that products can only be placed in or taken out of the trolley via the open top side. A customer collects the trolley by placing their debit or credit card in the card reader and if the customer is not in possession of such a card then they can collect a pass from the supermarket instead. An alarm is generated if goods are placed in the trolley without scanning them. The customer can leave the shop with the trolley as soon as they have purchased all the goods that they need, without having to go to a till, whilst shoppers without a debit or credit card take their pass to a till in order to pay for the outstanding amount in cash.
