A cutting element 720 for use, in lieu of or in combination with, polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter elements 710 to provide a shearing action on various downhole tools, such as drill bits 700, reamers, stabilisers and hole openers. The cutting element 720 uses a shearing element, made of PDC, thermally stable polycrystalline diamond (TSP) or cubic boron nitride (CBN), disposed on a support. The support, possibly a blade, may compromise diamond impregnated material. The shearing element may be, at least partially, overlaid by a retaining element 724 to provide a retention mechanism to prevent the shearing element from dislodging from the support. The shearing element may also have a coating, such as titanium carbide or silicon carbide, to enhance its retention through chemical means. Also disclosed is a method of forming the cutting element. |
