A vertical shaft 17, such as the propeller shaft of a top-entering mixer, is driven by an electric motor 10 through reduction gearing 24, 25, 29, 30, the final pinion of which is secured to a hollow quill shaft 15 surrounding shaft 17, the upper ends of the two shafts being connected by a tapered adapter 33 secured by bolts 34 to the quill shaft 15 and by further bolts 35 to an end plate 36 in turn secured by bolts 37 to the shaft 17. The use of adapters of different sizes allows the fitting of shafts of varying diameters. In addition the lower end of shaft 15 carries a conical ring 40 engaging a complementary ring 39 on shaft 17 to provide radial support for the latter, and the lower portion of shaft 17 carries a second conical ring 186 secured by a taper pin 85, and which drops on to a fixed ring 84 serving as a support for the shaft when the latter is lowered for servicing or repair of the unit. |
